Kenya To Do List

September:

  1. Accept a job in Kenya
  2. Tell my family I’m leaving for Africa
  3. Tell my friends I’m leaving Seattle for Africa
  4. Quit my Seattle job that I love where I’ve been working four years

October:

  1. Done: Go to the dentist while I still have access to modern health care and insurance
  2. Get my international drivers license
  3. Send envite for my goodbye party (email me if you’re not on the evite list yet)
  4. Sell some living room furniture: dining table, chairs, bookshelf, entertainment stand, work table, end tables, VCR, DVDs, etc
  5. Sell some kitchen stuff: blender, crockpot, food dehyrator, waffle maker, muffin tins, glasses, etc
  6. Sell some clothes to Buffalo Exchange; give the rest away to friends, garage sales, Freecycle, or Goodwill
  7. Sell some books to Half Price Books; give the rest away to friends or Goodwill or Freecycle
  8. Give misc stuff away: decorations, kitchen stuff, stereo, videos, etc
  9. Recruit, hire, and train someone to take over my job as director of the nonprofit
  10. Go see my friends as much as possible before I move away from Seattle (a potentially permanent move away from Seattle)
  11. Still have to do: Figure out where to move to after Kenya (Seattle? Austin?)
  12. Save more; Remember that my salary is gone in a month, and that I’ll still have car payments while I’m away
  13. Move some stuff to storage (in Austin? in Seattle?)
  14. Learn Swahili
  15. Sell my futon, bed, chair, and misc junk
  16. Get my Kenyan visa
  17. Go to the doctor while I still have access to modern health care and insurance
  18. Research water filtration systems
  19. Figure out camera dilemma… Bring my digital camera with no electricity to charge it? Buy a nice digital SLR w/ no electricity to charge it? Buy a nice film SLR? Borrow Bill’s old SLR? Other?
  20. Figure out music dilemma… Buy i-pod w/ no electricity to charge it? Bring batteries and discman? Burn mix CDs? Bring tapes that can be played with a machine they already have in Kenya?

November:

  1. Get rid of the rest of my furniture and belongings like bed, futon, etc (sell? donate?)
  2. Go to Baltimore for a business trip (Nov 1-3)
  3. Show some of my photos (and ideally sell some!) in the First Thursday Art Walk (Nov 3)
  4. Go to Lopez Island with friends for my final weekend in Seattle (Nov 4-6)
  5. Get my shots, pills, etc from the Travel Clinic (Nov 7)
  6. Have a goodbye party in Seattle (Thurs Nov 10)
  7. Move out of my apartment (Nov 12)
  8. Road trip w/ Caroline to Texas (Nov 13)
  9. Spend Thanksgiving with the family in Florida

December:

  1. Prepare and pack for Kenya
  2. Training on the East Coast
  3. Have a hello/goodbye party in Austin
  4. Holidays with the family
  5. Vacation with the family? Use parents time share?
  6. Make sure everyone has my address so they can get ready to start writing letters

  1. What an incredibly exciting thing to stand on the threshold of! I am envious beyond belief, and have only one suggestion for your list: Don’t worry about where to go after Africa until you’ve experienced it. You may not be the same person when it’s all over.

  2. careful with the slr. if it’s not manual, then lithium batteries might be harder to find than AAs (which is what I use for my canon a85 digital).

    er, this might show the state of my denial, but how are you going to update your web log with no electricity?
